Agentic Payments: Monetization of MCP Servers

Introduction
MCP is a new standard that lets AI agents talk to outside tools and to each other in a clear, shared way. But it has no built-in way to make or take payments.
As autonomous AI agents continue to rise, a new class of infrastructure is emerging to support them.
One of the most promising innovations in this space is the Model Context Protocol (MCP) – a standard that allows agents to communicate and use external resources & tools.
But while MCP solves the communication problem, it does not solve the monetization problem.
In this post, we’ll explore:
- What MCP is
- How Payment Companies are attempting to monetize it
- And why Masumi offers abetter, decentralized solution to MCP monetization
What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard developed by Anthropic to streamline the integration of AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs), with external tools, services, and data sources
Introduced in November 2024, MCP addresses the complexity of connecting AI systems to diverse environments by providing a unified, model-agnostic interface.

MCP operates on a client-server architecture, facilitating standardized communication between AI models and external resources
- MCP Clients: These are components within AI applications that
initiate requests to MCP servers - MCP Servers: These expose specific capabilities or data sources,
such as file systems, databases, or APIs, to the AI models.
Communication between clients and servers is typically handled via JSON-RPC over HTTP, enabling lightweight and efficient.
The Monetization Problem
Despite its potential, MCP lacks a built-in monetization layer. If one agent wants to get access to some resources or tools, how do they pay for that service?
- No native payment mechanism in the protocol
- No built-in metering
If developers can’t get paid to build agents, they won’t build agents. That’s where monetization becomes critical.
Traditional Web2 payment providers - such as PayPal, Stripe, and others - approach agent monetization using well-known techniques like:
- Paywalls on API endpoints
- Metered billing per usage or subscription
- OAuth-style authentication tied to user accounts
These approaches can work, but they have major limitations:
- Centralization: Payments are routed through third-party intermediaries who control the flow.
Poor fit for agents: These systems are built for human users, not automated agents calling other agents. - Limited composability: Linking payment with access control is clunky and requires custom integration.
- No on-chain proof: There’s no verifiable log of what was paid for or delivered.
This results in friction, vendor lock-in, and limited economic models for agent ecosystems.
Masumi: Monetization built for Agents
Masumi is a decentralized protocol purpose-built for the AI agent economy. Instead of bolting payments onto MCP from the outside, Masumi integrates monetization directly into agent communication workflows.

- Smart contract-based micropayments
- Agent-to-agent transactions without intermediaries
- On-chain logging of output and service delivery
- Decentralized Identity (DID) for reputation and trust
- Scalable via Cardano and Layer 2 (Hydra)
Masumi doesn’t just enable payments - it trustlessly coordinates economic activity between agents & MCP servers.
MCP Discovery
Another important part to the MCP puzzle is the discovery and dynamic usage of MCP servers. There will be millions of MCP servers available very soon, so how do you actually find the one your agent requires for the job?
Our solution for this is a wrapper MCP Server indexing all MCP Servers (and Agents) registered on Masumi and making them available to your MCP Client of choice.

Conclusion & How Masumi Enables Better MCP Monetization
MCP is a pivotal piece of infrastructure for AI agents. But without monetization, it’s incomplete.
While traditional payment providers offer legacy solutions for monetization, they were never designed for automated, decentralized agent ecosystems. They create friction and rely on centralized control.
Masumi changes that. It brings native, scalable, and trustless monetization to MCP - making it easier than ever to build, deploy, and profit from autonomous agents.
→ Join the Masumi ecosystem and monetize your agents the right way.
